Virgin London Marathon 2019
I am still very pleased with the result. It is my second fastest marathon. So I have nothing to be unhappy about. I didn’t reach my goal, but I had a great race.
I got off to a good start. Weather conditions were perfect. The crowds were amazing. The first km was about 5:11 and then I hit a good pace around 5:05. I had given up on the sub 3:30 because of the problems my right calf in the month leading up to the race, but went out trying for a PB. I had briefly thought about changing to wave 3 and running with the 3:45 pacer, but decided to see if PB was possible.
Around 30k I ran out of energy and slowed down. From there to the finish my pace was about 5:35-5:40. I am pleased that I didn’t die completely but managed to hold a stabile pace.
The last 4-5k were tough, but I was able to enjoy the course and the crowds. And passing Buckingham Palace running towards the finish was magical 🙂
I am taking two things away from this race:
1. I need to look at my fueling before and during the race, so I can keep going faster for longer.
2. Despite not hitting my goal I am in great shape (also mentally)
